Heung-Min Son to return to Tottenham Hotspur as South Korea suffer Asian Cup quarter-final defeat
Heung-Min Son is to return to Tottenham as South Korea have been knocked out the Asian Cup at the quarter-final stage.Son, the forward, linked up with his country for the mid-season competition earlier this month, with his most recent domestic appearance the defeat by Manchester United on January 13.His international commitments ruled him out last week’s win at Fulham and Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final loss at Chelsea.Son played all three of South Korea’s matches after arriving late for the tournament1

But Son is now free to return to England with South Korea suffering a shock defeat by Qatar, with Abdulaziz Hatem’s 78th minute goal enough to send the 2022 World Cup hosts through to the Asian Cup semi-finals.The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 loss.Son captained South Korea for the duration of the tournament, though he did not link up with South Korea until after their opening two group stage matches. He provided two assists in his first appearance of the competition – a 2-0 win over China – but failed to score a single goal throughout the three matches he played. The former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen forward returns to Tottenham having already netted 12 times this season for the Lilywhites.Son’s return could not come sooner with his fellow attacker Harry Kane currently unavailable through injury; Kane, the England international, is expected to be out until March.Mauricio Pochettino has been forced to use Fernando Llorente over the past couple of weeks due to Kane’s absence, though Son’s return from the Asian Cup will increase the Tottenham manager’s options in attack.Lucas Moura, who was, like Kane, sidelined due to injury, made his return in the Carabao Cup defeat by Chelsea to further ease Spurs’ selection crisis in the final third. There has not yet been any confirmation as to whether Son will be available for Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round visit to Crystal Palace.
