Raheem Sterling has called for Montenegro to be forced to play their next home game behind closed doors after England players were racially abused in Podgorica on Monday night. The 24-year-old celebrated his goal late on in the 5-1 win by cupping his ears in a gesture to the supporters who had racially abused England’s black players during the Euro 2020 qualifying clash.3
Best way to silence the haters (and yeah I mean racists) #2019 #getsomeeducation pic.twitter.com/ohhkOJtdey— Raheem Sterling (@sterling7) March 25, 2019England manager Gareth Southgate was saddened and dismayed by the “unacceptable” racist abuse endured by his players and vowed to report it to UEFA.“I didn’t hear (anything) during the early part of the game, but I’m told there were things in the early part of the game as well.“But I certainly heard when Danny Rose was booked and it’s unacceptable. I’ve spoken to our players individually. We’ve got to support them. We will report it.“But I think that reporting is already in place because so many people in other areas of the ground have heard it. I believe the UEFA delegate also heard it.“So, our part will be to make sure that process is followed, but more importantly for me is that the players in the dressing room know that as a group of staff and as an organisation we’re there for them. That’s the most important thing.”Sterling scored England’s fifth goal after a Michael Keane header, a Ross Barkley brace and a strike from captain Harry Kane turned the game in favour of the visitors after Marko Vesovic’s effort put Montenegro ahead.Barkley, who was eligible to play for Nigeria as he has as a Nigerian grandfather, also spoke out about the situation.“I was off the pitch at the time when it looked like something had happened and a few of the players were looking a bit disappointed,” he said.3
