Metropolitan Police on Millwall vs Everton fights: ‘Most shocking football violence for some time’
The Metropolitan Police have described the violent clashes between Millwall and Everton fans ahead of their FA Cup clash on Saturday as “some of the most shocking football violence we have seen for some time”.An Everton fan suffered a “life-changing injury” after an attack from a Millwall supporter amid violent scenes in south London before the tea-time kick-off.The injured man named himself on social media as Jay Burns, posting an image showing a long scar down the right side of his face, while a police officer was also injured.Jay Burns required stitches on his face after he was slashed during clashes between Everton and Millwall fansJay Burns Facebook3

The Met are also investigating allegations of racist chanting during the match, some of which was captured on video and posted on social media.Deputy assistant commissioner Matt Twist said: “The disorder which occurred before, during and after the Millwall v Everton Cup match on Saturday, 26 January was some of the most shocking football violence we have seen for some time.“The abhorrent behaviour lasted a number of hours, involved dozens of people, and resulted in at least one serious injury. “One man was taken to hospital with a horrific, life-changing injury to his face. One of our officers was also injured, and has now been discharged from hospital.“We have a highly-skilled team closely reviewing evidence as we speak, and I am confident we will soon know the identities of those involved.“We will use this evidence and all tools within our power to locate the individuals involved in this ridiculous behaviour, whether they come from London, Liverpool or elsewhere. We will bring them to justice.”3Millwall’s 3-2 win over the Premier League side was then marred by a video which appears to show home fans engaging in racist taunts of the visitors. The Football Association has said it is investigating while Millwall have pledged to hand out life bans to any one found guilty.Lions chief executive Steve Kavanagh said the incidents have ruined the win, but insists the club should not be subjected to an “attack” or the “same old response”, claiming the response has been blown out of proportion.Mr Burns has been offered free treatment by Apprentice winner Dr Leah Totton3

“I have to remember the core support of the club, the vast majority, are outraged by what has gone on here and that is what makes me sad in the attack that is going on,” Kavanagh told BBC Radio Five Live.“Is (is) that these people aren’t educated and they just don’t understand?“Millwall Football Club cannot be responsible for educating the whole of south east London and this group of people.

Tony Cascarino: “Millwall violence makes my stomach turn”

“We need the authorities, the Football Association, Kick It Out, ourselves and other clubs, rather than threatening everyone with ground closures and sensationalising, ‘Chuck them out of the cup’, and ridiculous notions that are going on….“We need to all come together and find a way of trying to get this education. Football is fantastic, let’s use its place in society to educate people and find a way of doing that and really coming together.“Don’t say, ‘Oh let’s get Millwall out of the FA Cup’, use it as a position to say, ‘Let’s get with Millwall, they have been doing this for years, they have got organisations set up in place to educate people, let’s go and work with them and see how we can help them’.“It’s an area I would like to explore with the FA and Kick It Out, rather than the same old response which is, ‘Right, let’s have a go at Millwall, let’s fine them or do whatever’.“That’s not getting us anywhere.“This isn’t just a Millwall thing, this happens across society, if you try and tell me there hasn’t been a this sort of chant in another club this season in this country I won’t believe you.“It’s an issue in society, we will take responsibility for our guys.“We are an easy peg to hang this on, there is a history there and everything something like this comes up it gets blown into huge proportions as is happening now.”

Tottenham Hotspur news: Do these omens prove Spurs are going to win the Champions League?
Tottenham Hotspur go into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City with a 1-0 lead.Spurs are so used to their club finding ways to cock up in promising positions, so many, despite their excitement, are feeling a little pessimistic.Heung-min Son is expected to be Tottenham’s main man until the end of the season1
Heung-min Son is expected to be Tottenham’s main man until the end of the season
But it turns out they may not need to worry as one of the N17 faithful has spotted the stars are beginning to align for the Lilywhites.Heung-Min Son’s solitary strike does have them in a good position and they will face Ajax in the semi-final if they do get past Man City, although a date with Barcelona or Liverpool would potentially wait in the Madrid final.Sometimes, though, fate is on your side and Trevor Lloyd reckons it might well be their year. Tiger Woods’ stunning win at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia may well be the first sign given his last major win came back in 2008 – the same year as Tottenham’s last trophy win, when they defeated Chelsea in the League Cup.Maybe surprisingly, Watford may be the second sign as in 1984 – the last time the Hornets made the FA Cup final – Spurs won their last European trophy, beating Anderlecht on penalties in the UEFA Cup.Coincidence, or proof the football gods are on their side? We’ll find out.Meanwhile, a win in the Champions League would also ensure Spurs continue their run of winning a trophy in every decade since the Second World War.

Everton news: Former defender Alan Stubbs urges club to stick with manager Marco Silva
Alan Stubbs has urged Everton chiefs to stick with Marco Silva. The Toffees manager is under pressure after losing nine of his last 15 games, butStubbs, who played for Everton for six years across two spells in the 2000s, believes Silva deserves time to turn around the clubs fortunes. Some Everton fans want Marco Silva out3
Some Everton fans want Marco Silva out
The ex-Toffees coach told talkSPORT: Over the last three years, Everton have spent the best part of 250million and thats the worry for every Everton fan.We don’t look like we’ve gone forward, it looks like weve stood still and stagnated. I do think, personally, we’ve got to stick with the manager.I don’t think chopping and changing the manager is the way forward. Hes been there for two windows, but hes only been there for one window in terms of buying because we didn’t bring anyone in last month. The owner echoed it the other day, weve got to give him a little bit of time, weve got to not make rash decisions.Alan Stubbs used to be a coach at Everton’s academy3
Alan Stubbs used to be a coach at Everton’s academy
I think hes got to see the season out, try to get some results along the way to try to help the situation and then hes got a big summer.Defending set-pieces has been a major problem since Silva was appointed on a three-year deal last summer.Everton have conceded 19 goals from dead-ball situations this season – the most recent one coming in their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City when Aymeric Laporte headed home David Silvas free-kick for the opener on Wednesday night. But Stubbs, a former centre-back, insists Evertons players need to take responsibly for their poor defending. He said: The fact of the matter is weve conceded too many disappointing goals from set-pieces and I know the manager has taken a lot of criticism from that.Everton conceded their 19th goal from a set-piece this season against Manchester City on Wednesday3
Everton conceded their 19th goal from a set-piece this season against Manchester City on Wednesday
But the players have to stand up for that because a manager can tell players where he wants them standing, but he cant tell them to go and head the ball, that comes from the individuals.A lot of the goals that they’ve conceded from set-pieces is not the managers fault, its a responsibility that the players need to take in terms of going and putting their head on the ball. The balls that are coming into the box, they’re not undefendable – theyre coming into areas where you expect your centre-halves, your bigger players to go and head the ball. If they’re not winning the first ball, there becomes a lack of concentration on the second one because players are just switching off.Its a little bit like well, this is my area, the balls gone over my head, its not my problem.Once the first phase is over, youve still got to defend the second phase and sometimes the third phase. You can see sometimes when its going over players heads, youve got other opposition players running off their backs through a lack of concentration and they’re getting punished at the moment and its disappointing.

Despite the absence of first-choice centre-back Samuel Umtiti through injury, the 24-year-old has been overlooked continuously by Deschamps and has not been included in the national team since making an appearance on the bench against Spain in March 2017.A 57million signing from Athletic Bilbao in January, Laporte feels his continued absence has nothing to do with football.“There is a coach and he doesn’t call me, so I need to wait, to keep working and that’s it,” Laporte told Basque media outlet EiTB.The defender has not been in the squad since March 20172
The defender has not been in the squad since March 2017
“Of course I don’t think it’s because of a sporting issue, you’d have to ask him personally, I don’t have anything personal against him, but if someone has a problem it’s him and not me.“I could be a world champion… but these are the decisions of the coach, who is not calling me for, I think, personal reasons, and I have to respect him. While he is eligible to represent Spain, Laporte has appeared to rule out that option. “Play with Spain. I think that’s already closed, but even so I opt for France because I’m French, I don’t have dual citizenship and I’m not going to ask for it.”

There was a bit with Arsene Wenger and the crowd. The atmosphere was like nothing else. The Stoke fans were really up for it, they generated a great noise and Arsenal hated coming to the Britannia.First challenge, Id win the ball but Id go right through whoever I was pressing against. We used to not let teams out. If they wanted to play out wed set it up so they could play out to the centre-half, but I would full-on sprint, everyone would be behind me and that just gets the crowd going.Once we got the crowd going, they were on the back foot.Another former Stoke man, Dave Kitson, previously told talkSPORT that Stokes excessive aggression against Arsenal directly led to Ramseys horror injury in February 2010.Ramsey suffered a horror injury after a challenge by Shawcross2

He said: We crossed the line because we went hell for leather to try and win that game and be aggressive, which was a reflection of the way Tony [Pulis] wanted us to play.We didnt go out to break anyones leg. We did go out to be physical and in that game we crossed the line.Six months after that incident, Wenger took aim at Pulis tactics and labelled Stoke a rugby team.
