Shaun Harvey: EFL chief executive to step down from post at end of the season
Shaun Harvey will step down from his position as chief executive of the English Football League at the end of the season.Harvey will end a five-and-a-half-year reign when the 2018/19 EFL play-offs conclude in May.1“Having joined the EFL as CEO in October 2013, I am proud of what we have achieved since then, in what have not always been easy circumstances,” Harvey said in a statement.“After discussions with the board, we decided that the time is right for the EFL to now move in a different direction having concluded a number of commercial contracts that leave the league in a stable position.“I am happy to remain as CEO until after the play-offs, in order to conclude a number of outstanding matters that we are currently dealing with, after which I will move on to pastures new and hopefully make a positive difference elsewhere.”  Harvey, who took up the role of chief executive in October 2013, has worked for 25 consecutive years in professional football, all but two of which have been in the EFL with either clubs or the League itself.Interim EFL chair Debbie Jevans paid tribute to the work Harvey has done during his time in the job.

“The EFL would like to thank Shaun for all he has delivered since joining as CEO,” she said. “The EFL is in a strong position with a growing fan base throughout the world and Shaun deserves a lot of credit for this.“Shaun and the board have agreed that the time is now right for a change of leadership and a new direction. We are pleased that Shaun has agreed to stay on until the end of the season.”

Arsenal’s season is wobbling and their recent poor form continued on Friday night as they exited the FA Cup by losing to Manchester United.It’s now five losses in 10 games across all competitions with a patched up defence attempting to get the Gunners through their tough time.4But now it seems manager Unai Emery is set to enter the transfer market to try and get things right at the Emirates.Rather than spend defensively, though, the Spaniard looks likely to sign a winger and a versatile midfielder, according to the latest reports.Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic has handed in a transfer request and could now join the Gunners as they look to arrange a loan-to-buy deal, which could eventually be worth 35million.Meanwhile, a loan move for Denis Suarez or Christopher Nkunku might also happen to add depth in key areas for the top six side, who could miss out on Champions League qualification for the second consecutive season.But what would an Arsenal team look like with Perisic and one of Suarez or Nkunku? Goalkeeper

Unless current no.1 Bernd Leno experiences a severe dip in form it’s unlikely anyone other than the German will be occupying the space between the sticks for the long-term.Petr Cech will remain his deputy, playing in cup matches, while a successor to the veteran, when he retires at the end of the season is unlikely to come until the summer.

Defence

Hector Bellerin’s huge injury blow came at the worst time for Emery as he attempts to sort out his leaky backline.Laurent Koscielny may be back and Sokratis Papastathopoulos may have been added in the summer but it’s an area which needs significant improvement when you compare it to the rest of the top six.For the time being the right-back role will be going to either Ainsley Maitland-Niles or veteran Switzerland star Stephan Lichtsteiner, while, when fit, Koscielny and Sokratis, will be the first-choice backline until Rob Holding returns.At left-back, Nacho Monreal will start but this also depends on his fitness.4

Midfield

It’s likely, given his previous managerial tendencies, Emery will want to get his 4-3-3 on the go, even if this does stifle the career of some of the club’s big name players.We’ve already seen he isn’t afraid to chop and change for tactical reasons, with Mesut Ozil frequently being left out.Granit Xhaka, for the time being, looks like being he short-passing midfielder anchor who safer keeps play ticking along, while summer signing Lucas Torreira will continue to the right of him.It’s on the left side we’re will see either Christopher Nkunku or Denis Suarez fit in, more advanced than the other central midfielders, their role will be to shuttle the ball forward with their dribbling skills, while then using the vision they both possess to pick the correct pass in the final third.4

Attack

Down the middle, it’s unlikely Alexandre Lacazette will get above Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the pecking order while we could also see Alex Iwobi out on the right wing.This would allow potential new boy Perisic to take up his usual role on the left.We could potentially see Lacazette through the middle and Aubameyang towards the right but this could harm the goal scoring of Aubameyang.Meanwhile, another option might be to play Perisic and Aubameyang as two wider forwards with Iwobi just tucked behind them as a No.10.4
