Gordon Taylor PFA exit: Simon Jordan does not see the need for a players’ union in modern football
Simon Jordan does not see the need for the Professional Footballers’ Association in modern football. It was confirmed on Wednesday that chief executive of the PFA, Gordon Taylor, will be leaving the role after 38 years. The 74-year-old announced last November there would be an independent review into the organisation following criticism over Taylor’s running of the union, where its funding goes andhis reported 2.2million salary. The entire management committee and current chairman, Ben Purkiss, will also step down at the completion of the review.Gordon Taylor is set to leave the PFA3
Gordon Taylor is set to leave the PFA
Former chairman, Clarke Carlisle, told talkSPORT the current PFA is not fit for purpose and it must reflect the needs of modern footballers, while ex-Crystal Palace owner Jordan was similarly critical of the union and does not see the need for it.Ive been a big critic of the PFA over the years,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “Ive been someone whos had lots of issues with Gordans attitude and outlook and also dealing with him commercially. We had an issue with Gordon this time last year over his defence of Riyad Mahraz and we had an interesting debate with him about his view on certain things. There is this sea change within the PFA where there is this need to revolutionise, modernise and evolve.Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan3
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan
Ive always had an issue with the PFA because I did not understand why they were there in the first place.I understood that there is a union in place, it is the worlds smallest union. Ive never understood why it got funded the way it does. The league giving them 27million a year because once upon a time Gordon was able to leverage money out of the TV companies via the Premier League with the threat of strike.I look at the PFA and say: What exactly does it do?Taylor is the highest-paid trade union chief in the world3
Taylor is the highest-paid trade union chief in the world
I talk to a lot of footballers and ex-players that have a very dim view and I look at Gordon Taylors role and I look at the fact he has used it as a personal fiefdom. He does get paid a salary of 1.5million plus bonuses and he does draw extraordinary expenses. Then the flip side of it, if you are going to have somebody on your side you want to have Gordon Taylor because if anyone is going to negotiate a deal it is Gordon Taylor, if anyone has robustness its Gordon Taylor.

I have watched this unfold with a degree of mixed emotions because I dont like a lot of the things Gordon does, I dont like a lot of things the PFA does. The Premier League is the only reason the PFA get any money, because the Premier League was able to negotiate a deal. The people who dont really need the PFA are Premier League players. It is really the League One and League Two players who get a benefit. I still think at League One and League Two level it is way beyond the salary that people get in the everyday world that we live in or most people live in.I do feel there is a lot of changes that are needed for the PFA and I do still maintain that I dont know why they are here in an industry that I dont think really require them.

Denmark 1-1 Republic of Ireland: Late Shane Duffy header preserves unbeaten run in Euro 2020 qualifying campaign
Shane Duffy’s late header saw the Republic of Ireland earn a valuable point in their Euro 2020 qualifier at Denmark by securing a 1-1 draw in Copenhagen. The Irish looked set for their first defeat of the campaign when Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg gave the Danes the lead on 76 minutes. But Duffy’s 85th-minute bullet header, his third international goal, was enough to claim a point at the Telia Parken Stadium and preserve his side’s unbeaten start to their Group D campaign.Brighton defender Duffy was Ireland’s hero in CopenhagenGetty Images - Getty1
Brighton defender Duffy was Ireland’s hero in Copenhagen
The draw is the fourth in five meetings between the sides in the last 19 months and while Republic boss Mick McCarthy will be delighted with his return from a battling performance in Copenhagen, opposite number Age Hareide was left kicking himself.Darren Randolph made fine saves from Christian Eriksen and Yussuf Poulsen either side of the break, but Denmark wasted a series of golden opportunities to open the scoring before Hojbjerg belatedly did so, and they were ultimately made to pay.The Danes entertain Georgia on Monday evening with just two points from the opening two qualifiers, while Ireland have banked seven ahead of Gibraltar’s trip to Dublin the same night.Irish obstinacy – three of the four most recent encounters between the sides have finished 0-0 – has been a source of great exasperation to the Danes, with midfielder Thomas Delaney describing the Republic as his nation’s “most annoying” opponent in the run-up to the game.Adrian Durham defends John Stones playing out after his mistakes Quite what the mood was in the home dressing room at the break on this occasion was a matter for debate with Denmark dominating the first half for long periods – Eriksen showed few signs of a Champions League final hangover – but without finding a way past goalkeeper Randolph. It was Erisken who tested Randolph with an 11th-minute free-kick which bounced nastily in front of the goalkeeper, although he should have done better with 27 minutes played when he took advantage of a collision between Glenn Whelan and James McClean to race clear, although his decision to cut back on to his right foot to shoot allowed Jeff Hendrick to make a timely intervention. In the meantime, Martin Braithwaite spurned two passable opportunities, but Kasper Schmeichel had found himself desperately clawing away Duffy’s improvised effort after Conor Hourihane had caught out the home defence with a devilish free-kick.The Republic gradually managed to stem the tide as the half-time whistle approached, but McCarthy had work to do at the break.

Poulsen squandered a glorious opportunity to put the Danes ahead within eight minutes of the restart when, after running on to Nicolai Jorgensen’s perfectly-weighted pass, he stepped inside Duffy’s lunge, but could not find a way past Randolph. However, Ireland responded within seconds when Robbie Brady picked out McClean inside the box and he drilled a shot into the near post, where Schmeichel made a vital block.David McGoldrick flicked a header onto the roof of the net with the visitors sensing an opportunity, but they were quickly put back in their place when Poulsen’s 59th-minute run only failed to result in the opening goal when Hourihane’s desperate challenge sent the ball agonisingly wide of the post. Braithwaite and Jorgensen both passed up good chances as McCarthy’s men became increasingly stretched, but the deadlock was broken with 14 minutes remaining when Hojbjerg timed his run to perfection to get to Jens Larsen’s cross ahead of Richard Keogh and glance a header past Randolph. The lead lasted just nine minutes, however, and Ireland snatched a point as the game approached its final throes when Duffy climbed high above Simon Kjaer to power home a header from substitute Alan Judge’s free-kick and secure a potentially priceless point.

However, the tournament is certainly worth keeping an eye on, especially given where the previous Golden Ball winners have ended up.The biennial event has seen some of the top players in world football rise to prominence, with historical winners, including the great Diego Maradona.talkSPORT.com takes a look at the most recent Golden Ball winners at the U20 World Cup and where they are now.

Dominic Solanke – Bournemouth

Solanke joined Bournemouth from Liverpool in January
It feels like Dominic Solanke has been around forever, but he’s only 21.He was one of many young England stars who shone during the 2017 U20 World Cup triumph and subsequently won the Golden Ball.Despite incredible success in youth football, at both domestic level with Chelsea and on the international stage with England, the striker’s senior career has barely got going. He left Chelsea without making a single Premier League appearance, and his two-year spell at Liverpool ended with just one league goal.Solanke now plies his trade at Bournemouth, where he will hope to get his big break next season.

Adama Traore – Monaco

Adama Traore was the star of the 2015 U20 World Cup
Adama Traore (no, not the one who plays for Wolves) helped guide Mali to a historic bronze medal at the 2015 U20 World Cup.But since then, the 23-year-old’s career has stalled.Traore four goals and three assists at the U20 World Cup helped earn him a move to Monaco, but four years on, he is yet to break into the first team, spending two seasons out on loan at Rio Ave and Cercle Brugge with little success.

Paul Pogba – Manchester United

Paul Pogba got 13 goals and nine assists in the Premier League this season
Paul Pogba’s success since winning the Golden Ball at the U20 World Cup in 2013 depends largely on who you ask.But opinions aside, the Manchester United midfielder has lifted the World Cup, the Europa League and Serie A four times – that’s not bad, right? The 26-year-old also has an uncanny habit of scoring in finals, which began at the U20 World Cup when he netted in the penalty shootout victory over Uruguay.

Henrique Almeida – Gremio

Big things were expected of Henrique Almeida@henriqueh91 on instagram8
Big things were expected of Henrique Almeida
Remember Henrique Almeida? No?Not all U20 World Cup Golden Ball winners go onto super stardom.Almeida, the 27-year-old Brazilian striker, was the star of the 2011 tournament which featured James Rodriguez, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho. However, he has never earned a senior cap for his country and currently plies his trade at Portuguese club Belenenses, on loan from Brazilian team Grenio.

Dominic Adiyiah – Sisaket

Dominic Adiyiah’s U20 World Cup heroics earned him a move to AC Milan
Admittedly, this list hits a bit of a bump in the middle. It gets better, I promise.Dominic Adiyiah somehow manages to top Almeida as the most disappointing U20 World Cup Golden Ball winner. After scoring eight goals in seven games as Ghana won the tournament for the first time in 2009, European giants AC Milan gambled on him.But during a two year spell, he never got on the pitch, and he has since played in Ukraine and Kazakhstan before settling in Thailand. After three years at Nakhon Ratchasima, he recently joined fellow Thai club Sisaket.

Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

I did tell you it would get better.Sergio Aguero has become one of the greatest Premier League strikers in history. The prolific Argentine forward netted six times at the 2007 U20 World Cup as Argentina won the tournament for a record sixth time.Twelve years on, he’s just won a historic domestic treble with Manchester City, for whom he’s the all-time leading goalscorer.

Lionel Messi – Barcelona

Well, here we have arguably the greatest player in history.A 17-year-old Messi took the U20 World Cup by storm in 2005 and the rest, as they say, is history.
